Naxos is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. It combines superior beaches, mountainous beauty, picturesque villages and lot of sightseeing. Naxos is an island of beautiful old churches, monasteries and Venetian castles and homes. Naxos has been continuously inhabited since the 4th Milennium BC and excavations around the island bring to light ancient artifacts and buildings almost daily. So if Mykonos-style tourism makes its way to Naxos and it becomes the darling of the Aegean jet-set crowd, hey that's great, (I suppose). But in the meantime Naxos is happy with their reputation as a big beautiful island, rich in agriculture, tradition, some of the finest beaches in the Cyclades, and an interior waiting to be discovered.
Naxos has some of the very best beaches in Greece. There are kilometres of beaches to choose from, and most of them are sandy. There are popular and busy beaches with tourist infrastructure as well as quiet and remote beaches. The south west of Naxos is almost one beach, interrupted by a few peninsulas. North and east beaches are beautiful too and lesser known.
Naxos Island has many villages to visit and most of them have their own distinct character and style. Most of the villages in Naxos Island are in the middle and the north of the island. Koronos, Apeiranthos, Filoti, Halki, Sagri, Potamia, Galini, Eggares are just a few of them that attract visitors for both the village and the surroundings.
Naxos Island has long history which includes the Venetian occupation, Byzantine period, Hellenistic period, Archaic period and goes back to Neolithic period. Naxos has history and culture.
Churches with byzantine frescoes, ruins of neolithic settlements, ancient temples, Frank castles, Venetian castles, palaces, archaeological museums, folklore museums marked with the stamp of past glories.
Naxos Island is popular with tourists due to the many beautiful beaches which accommodate people with a love of water sports and water activities such as Windsurf, Kitesurf. For those people visiting that want to take a closer look at life under the water, Scuba Diving is offered on Naxos island. For land activities, visitors have several choices. Horse Riding, cycling, hiking are more popular.
By sea: There are many connections between Naxos and Mainland Greece (Piraeus and Rafina ports). Journey from Piraeus will take from 3.5 to 5.5 hours depending the vessel, catamaran or ferry. The schedule from Piraeus is normally via Paros Island and sometimes via Syros Island (ferries) too. There are several links to other islands. There are ferry connections between Naxos and Ios, Amorgos, Santorini, Folegandros, Koufonissia, Syros, Paros.
By air: There are 1-2 flights a day with Olympic Airways from Athens International airport (30 minutes flight time). Alternatively nearest airports are in Santorini and Mykonos islands.
